Why? As we continue to see and feel the impacts of climate change, sustainability has become increasingly more important. Today’s youth are going to be faced with new challenges presented by climate change and need the tools to understand sustainability, what it is, why it matters, and what they can do in their communities as agents of change. Sustainability Ambassadors is an opportunity for teens to understand the intersections of sustainability by exploring the sustainable development goals, sustainable food systems, consumption and waste, climate action, and more. Sustainability Ambassadors will graduate the program having identified ways they will make an impact in their communities.

What? In the spring, youth will participate in virtual and in-person learnings, site visits, and field trips to gain a deep understanding of the intersections of sustainability in everyday life, local communities, and globally. During the summer, youth will complete 10 volunteer hours at a community garden or community compost site. To culminate the program, youth will complete a final project and present their sustainability action plans. Upon completion of the program requirements, youth will earn their Rutgers & HCIA Sustainability Ambassador certificate.

Where? The program will run both in-person and virtually. In-person learning sessions take place at the Lincoln Park Gallo Center, with site visits to the 4-H Family Learning Garden at Lincoln Park, and field trips to various sites in Hudson County and beyond.

When? The program will kick off virtually on Tuesday, March 14 at 7pm with an orientation and introduction to sustainability. The program will meet bi-weekly from March through June for a mix of virtual and in-person, hands-on, interactive programming and field trips culminating in an end of program celebration in September. Volunteer hours will take place during the summer at Youth Urban Farm Club community garden or community compost sites, or a site of their choosing in Hudson County.
