Earth Day 2014

Earth Day 2014 5K Run/Walk & Fair to be Held April 26th at Liberty State Park – Rain or Shine

The Hudson County Improvement Authority's (HCIA) Annual Earth Day celebration will kick off at 10 am in the South Field adjacent to the Ferry Parking Lot at Liberty State Park on Saturday, April 26, with a 5K Run and the 5K Walk for Liberty sponsored by the Friends of Liberty State Park. With magnificent views of the New York City skyline, this day-long event provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about the environment and create a memorable experience for your family.

The national Earth Day theme this year is "Green Cities" focusing on the unique environmental challenges facing our urban municipalities today. All attendees are invited to visit the Wishing Trees to make a pledge to perform one act to make our Hudson municipalities "green".

"We want our kids to get out there and enjoy all the beauty that Hudson County has to offer," says County Executive Tom DeGise. "Celebrating Earth Day in Liberty State Park is an excellent way to help get our kids back-to-nature; all while learning how to protect our unique environment. With all the free crafts, giveaways and activities for the kids, it is a nice way for parents to relax and enjoy the outdoors as well."

Adults will be able to register for the Race/Walk on Saturday, April 26, at Liberty State Park from 7:30 to 9:30 am. Race registrants will receive tee-shirts and a chance to earn trophies and medals. The cost of the race is $21 if registration is postmarked by 4/19/14 and $25 on race day.

Following the 5K Run/Walk, there will be plenty of family-friendly activities to be found. From 11 am to 4 pm, a "Kids' Kingdom" area will include environment-themed displays, information on services available throughout 'Our Hudson Home', tree seedlings (compliments of the NJDEP's Division of Parks and Forestry). In addition, there will be many other giveaways and interactive entertainment, such as inflatable rides, arts and crafts activities, kite-flying and contests. There will be entertainment on stage throughout the day [including Field Station: Dinosaurs presents "The Dinosaur Troubadour and The Mighty T-Rex" and The Fuzzy Lemons] as well as strolling entertainers who will mix and mingle with the crowds. New this year: guests will also be able to visit the New Jersey Hall of Fame's Mobile Museum or take park in a Nature Walk through parts of Liberty State Park courtesy of the NJDEP's Division of Parks and Forestry.

"On behalf of myself and my fellow commissioners, I would like to invite you to join us for a great time at Liberty State Park on April 26th," said HCIA Chairman John L. Shinnick. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to bring residents together to learn about the environment and spend time with their community. It's a great day of free outdoor fun for the whole family."
